The Copperopolis-Lake Tulloch Lions Club was founded in 1987 by a group of local volunteers to serve the Copperopolis area. Through our fundraising events, we raise funds for projects with beneficiaries in the greater Copperopolis area including local Schools, Libraries, Veterans Groups, Food Pantry, Community Center, Scholarships for high school seniors, Angel Christmas Tree program and Disaster Services, and much more.

Our club meets monthly on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm at Black Creek Clubhouse in Black Creek Park, located just off Copper Cove Drive in Copperopolis. Copperopolis-Lake Tulloch Lions Club is a member of District 4-A1, which is part of Lions Club International (LCI). District 4-A1 serves Tuolumne, Calaveras, Amador, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Mariposa, and Madera Counties. In our district, we have 53 Lions Clubs and over 1,900 Lions working to improve and support people wherever there is a need.

HISTORY OF COPPEROPOLIS

Copperopolis is an unincorporated town in Calaveras County, California, located along State Route 4 between Stockton and Angels Camp. “Copper”, as the locals call it, is registered as a California Historical Landmark #296.

Unlike most of the mining towns in Calaveras County, Copperopolis’ claim to fame is not gold, but copper. It was founded in 1860 by William K. Reed, Dr. Allen Blatchly, and Thomas McCarty, at the site of the second major discovery of copper ore in the region.

The first Post Office was established in 1861 and the town grew rapidly as the need for Copper during the Civil War for material was great. After the war ended mining and shipping copper proved too expensive and the population dwindled as the mines closed. A Boston company purchased the mines in the 1880’s and mining operations resumed. The town went through boom periods during the two World Wars, when demand for copper went up again. The mines closed for good following World War II in 1946.

In 1958, the area experienced another renaissance with the construction of the Lake Tulloch Dam and power plant. The result was Lake Tulloch Reservoir, a recreational lake which is one of the few lakes in California that allows waterfront homes and private docks. The Lake Tulloch/Copperopolis area is a popular recreational destination due to its proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area and offers boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and off road activities. It is also in proximity to great wineries and shopping in the neighboring towns of Sonora, Angels Camp, Murphy’s and Jamestown in addition to its own charming Town Square at Copper Valley.
